The TRCC coordinates a quarterly webinar series for grassroots organizations, given by experts from our TRCC community and allies across sectors. We also curate a list of existing trainings each quarter and send that as a newsletter. Finally, the Lift Up program connects TRCC community members with mentoring from peers and allies, to assist leaders in boosting their capacity and personal well being.
Building Community Resilience Toolkit
This collection of books, online resources, trainings and courses was assembled by members and allies of the TRCC. Building Thriving, Resilient Communities explores many exciting resilient systems being created in communities across the nation (and planet) that demonstrate how we can live more sustainably, and in community, while respecting Nature’s limits. More than just inspiring stories, this collection contains tools—practical, tested, hands-on ways you can begin making your community more resilient. And best of all, most of these steps—collaborating with neighbors, supporting local farmers and tradespeople, reducing dependence on globalized trade—are the right thing to do… even if we weren’t facing unprecedented challenges!
Tools & Approaches
On the rest of this page you’ll find popular thriving resilience tools and approaches for community leaders and folks. Tools and approaches are the hands-on “wisdom systems” that are building thriving resilient communities today: principles and practices, education and training resources, stories, knowledge bases, etc.
Wisdom systems vary with the size of community. To help you find what’s useful to you, we first offer a simple local ecosocial system overview and then describe wisdom systems based on community scale. Each social ring builds on the other – personal wisdom is central to group and community wisdom, group process tools are foundational in communities, and cities are made of smaller groups and neighborhoods, etc. – so the smaller scale tools and approaches are relevant to larger scale communities too.
Local Ecosocial System Overview
This Local Ecosocial Systems Overview is one of many big-picture perspectives of the systems creating a local ecosocial community. For each system, the overview lists the kinds of organizations that typically steward that system in each local place, some organizations that support those systems at regional and national levels, and a selection of local tools and approaches that we have found to be useful.Your perspective and favorite toolkits may be somewhat different; please consider this map as food for thought and feel free to add comments and suggestions below. Based on our research and experience, we suggest that effective tipping points for thrivingresilience community development in North America are disaster preparedness and recovery, local economy, local food and water, and community co-leadership forums and councils.
