Millions of committed people are creating what we call the thrivingresilience metamovement, an unimaginable wealth of community initiatives with similar visions using a variety of perspectives such as Compassionate, Healthy, Livable, Local, Occupy, Peace, Resilient, Sustainable, Thrive, and Transition. All these movements come to ground in a common set of local ecosocial systems in real live places: food, water, air, land, biodiversity, energy, emergency response, buildings, health, education, social welfare, government, business, economy, transportation, communications, etc.
How can we build better systems tools and support teams for local, city, and regional leaders? What will it take to jump America’s communities to the next stage of thriving and resilience? This is the hot topic for the Thriving Resilient Communities Collaboratory (TRCC). The TRCC is an emerging action research project exploring ways to strengthen the local community metamovement by connecting leaders, mapping best practices, and fostering collaboration.
The seeds of TRCC were planted in 2011 when several funder friends were chatting over lunch and realized that we were all working on projects in our local communities. We used different names like sustainable, thrive, transition, and peace, but we all had the same questions about how the heck to best support the shift to (what we now call) thriving resilient communities. We decided to share what we knew and to bring more people into the conversation, one gathering at a time. We’ve gradually become a “think/do tank:” a networking and capacity-building hub for leaders of different types of regional and national geographic networks (like TransitionUS and Generation Waking Up) and leaders of different kinds of local ecosocial system expert networks (like Sustainable Economies Law Center and PostCarbon Institute).
The TRCC hosts gatherings and cooks up cross-organization informal working groups we call “co-labs” to support getting to know and learn from each other and to identify opportunities for collaboration. Our TRC Story Co-lab is hosting this new blog and thrivingresilience.org website to tell the local community metamovement story.
The TRCC supports the thrivingresilience of local co-leaders. We seek more resilience-savvy friend and ally companions, more inclusive strategic thinking and campaigns, and less reinventing the wheel across multiple organizations. Let’s help each other create a world where the great-grandchildren of all species thrive.
